And the Sunshine Campaign

Roanoke Times Censors Huck Finn — To Make a Point

The Roanoke (Va.) Times demonstrated how government redaction can strike the meaning from a document — making the document public but "useless" — by taking a black pen to the second paragraph of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in an editorial.

The reasons for "censoring" included "personal identifying information of a minor," "ongoing police investigation," "adoption records," "private financial data from public-private contract," "terrorism-related national security intelligence" and even "improperly redacted." The unredacted text was posted online for comparison.

The Sunday Horizon opinion section also led with a column by Megan Rhyne of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government on the nonpartisan nature of open government; a piece by Times Editorial Page Editor Dan Radmacher highlighting concerns about serial meetings that circumvent the intent of Sunshine laws; and an overview by editorial board member Luanne Traud at important stories published by The Roanoke Times that were based on information obtained through FOIA requests.

Another piece of the Sunshine Week package was a column in the New River Valley section tab by editorial writer Christian Trejbal on the access — or lack thereof — to local government.

In addition to following the links above to each article, PDFs of The Roanoke Times Sunshine Week work can be downloaded here: the Huck Finn editorial; the Horizon section front and jump page; and the local column.
